Next book, revised

Special Topics in Calamity Physics is just not doing it for me, at all. I may come back to it later, but for now I can barely be bothered to read it - every time it gets going, the author seems to sabotage herself with too much cutesy intellectual navel gazing. So I'm putting it aside, and picking up Cormac McCarthy's The Road.

Good. I don't think I would have finished that book had I not been stuck on a plane with it. In fact, the more I think about it the more I dislike the writing. Also the teenage characters are so unreal. I read somewhere that the difference between YA lit and adult lit with a teenage narrator is perspective. YA lit is more immediate. But I'm not sure that a good enough exscuse for why the teenagers in Special Topics in Calamity Physics all acted like the out of touch adult's version of teenagers.
